Choosing the right light fitting can transform a room — but with so many styles, wattages, and IP ratings to consider, it can feel overwhelming. This room-by-room guide draws on the range we stock here at Luminosity Designs to help you make the right choice for every space in your home.
Kitchen: Bright, Functional, and Layered
Kitchens need the highest light levels in the home. Aim for 300–500 lumens per square metre for general task lighting. Recessed downlights work brilliantly for overall illumination but can leave shady spots if your ceiling is low due to their directional beam, while under-cabinet LED strip lights are ideal for worktop tasks. If you have a kitchen island, a single pendant or a multi-pendant bar hung at around 75–90cm above the surface adds both style and focused light.
IP rating tip: For areas within 1.2m of a sink, choose fittings rated IP44 or above.
Bathroom: Safety First, Style Second
Bathrooms are divided into zones (0, 1, and 2) that dictate which IP ratings are safe to use. As a general rule:
- Zone 0 (inside the bath or shower): IP67 minimum
- Zone 1 (directly above the bath/shower): IP44 minimum
- Zone 2 (within 60cm of Zone 1): IP44 recommended
Our bathroom lighting range includes IP-rated fittings designed to meet these requirements safely. We also stock a range of downlights that offer a clean, modern look with the right level of protection. For something a little different, our Phoenix Mini Pro Bulkhead is a versatile IP-rated option suitable for bathrooms and beyond.
Living Room: Layers of Light
The living room benefits most from layered lighting — combining ambient, task, and accent light sources. A chandelier or statement ceiling fitting provides general light, while floor lamps and table lamps create warmth and atmosphere. Dimmer switches are a worthwhile investment here, allowing you to shift from bright and practical to soft and relaxing.
Aim for around 150–300 lumens per square metre for ambient light, with additional task lighting near reading areas. Our Statement Pieces collection is a great starting point if you want a real focal point in the room.
Bedroom: Warm and Relaxing
Bedrooms call for softer, warmer light — look for bulbs with a colour temperature of 2700K–3000K. We stock a wide range of LED bulbs and lamps in warm white tones, including the popular Crompton 7W Warm White Dimmable Filament Bulb — perfect for bedside lamps and pendants.
A pendant light works well as a central fitting, while wall lights either side of the bed are ideal for reading without disturbing a partner. For a touch of character, our table lamp range includes everything from the playful Wonderland Lamp to classic columns
Hallway: First Impressions Count
Hallways are often overlooked, but good lighting here sets the tone for your entire home. Pendant lights work well in standard-height hallways, while wall lights at regular intervals improve both safety and aesthetics on staircases and longer corridors. For outdoor entrances and porches, our exterior lighting range has you covered.
